Addressing the Educator Diversity Gap: The Diverse Educator Pathways Program

Research consistently shows that students experience significant academic and social-emotional benefits when taught by educators who reflect their racial, cultural, and linguistic identities. Despite this, our state faces a severe shortage of racially and linguistically diverse educators.

In response to this urgent need, we launched the Diverse Educator Pathways Program, a program designed to cultivate a representative and culturally responsive educator workforce. In partnership with Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Beaverton, Tigard-Tualatin, and Sherwood school districts, we are developing a robust pipeline of diverse teaching talent.

Thanks to a recent Grow Your Own grant from the Educator Advancement Council, we have expanded our reach to include school districts in Astoria, Seaside, Neah-Kah-Nie, Tillamook, and Nestucca Valley.

Through this program, we work closely with schools and community partners to recruit aspiring educators and support them throughout their licensure journey. Participants join a networked learning community, where they receive mentorship, professional learning opportunities, and peer collaboration. Upon successful program completion, candidates commit to interviewing with their home district—strengthening local schools and increasing workforce sustainability.
