Our early literacy supports are rooted in the science of reading, evidence based practices, and Oregon's 2023 Early Literacy Success Initiative. Research shows that the ability to read accurately and fluently are linked with academic achievement across content, higher graduation rates and enhanced productivity in adult life. Our early literacy supports are co-designed with the instructional leaders in the region and are adaptive to the needs of our region's schools. Participants have access to professional development within three strands of content:
- science of reading
- science of teaching
- data-based decision making
Professional development is paired with in-district coaching, on-site professional development and technical assistance for building leaders.
This year, we will continue to support LETRS certification (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) for 40 educators in the region. We are also providing graduate credit and mentoring support through Eastern Oregon's reading clinic, a ten-week program focused on teaching practices and structured literacy. Our team believes that being a skilled reader is a civil right. We are intentional and collaborative as we design and adjust our programs with, and for, our region’s students, families and teachers.
