Are you looking for a fun and rewarding volunteer service project that will also teach you about the great outdoors and how to be a leader? Consider becoming a student leader with our Northwest Outdoor Science School program.
Student leaders — mostly high school students and some college students — live in cabins at overnight outdoor school with the sixth graders and teach fun, hands-on outdoor field study activities.
Being a student leader is a fun, inspiring and rewarding experience.
When you participate, you will learn how to:
- Be a good leader and a good teammate
- Teach younger children
- Communicate better
Student leaders lead interactive, hands-on outdoor activities especially designed for sixth graders. As a student leader, you will be assigned to a small group (8 - 14) of students for the week. You will lead them through activities, games, icebreakers, skits, songs and more. You will stay in the same cabin overnight and be the student leader of that group.
Additional benefits of being a student leader are:
- Making new friends from other high schools
- Gaining valuable volunteer experience that looks great on college, scholarship and job applications
- Earning transferable college credit (many high schools offer credit, too!)
- Changing the lives of elementary school students, often in ways that you'll never know.
Qualities that make a great student leader:
- Enthusiasm
- Flexibility (a great team player!)
- Responsibility and dependability
- Willing to learn and have fun
- Able to miss a week of school
- Enjoys working with children
