For the past two years money dedicated to improving literacy rates in Oregon has flowed to school districts around the state. Northwest Regional Education Service District secured over $14 million in early literacy grants, including more than $105,000 for Vernonia.  

After years of flat or declining reading scores, the district is now seeing scores rise. Last year, third grade proficiency rates jumped by more than 10 percentage points -- and the district’s efforts were subsequently featured by the Oregon Department of Education.

Vernonia Superintendent Jim Helman says the funding has given the district the opportunity to look at the science of reading and provide the needed professional learning for the teachers. 

In addition to this funding, Vernonia teachers also participate in NWRESD’s four-part science of reading training series and additional literacy seminars and training opportunities. 

Ryan Blasquez, a director of instructional services at NWRESD who oversees our efforts to improve literacy in our region, says Vernonia School District is making vital system-wide changes that will benefit teachers and students alike for years to come. 

"In order to improve outcomes for all kids, a system has to commit,” he says. “In Vernonia, you have leaders that have prioritized literacy and teachers who understand evidence based teaching practices. Their time, improvement work and energy is focused and intentional. When you have vertical alignment like that and everyone is on the same page, really great things can happen."
