After two years of dedicated service, board member Miriam Meneses-Rios is stepping down. Miriam has served in the social service position since July of 2023. A recent job change means she is no longer eligible to serve on the board in that role.

Her decade of experience as a regional division manager at the Washington County Juvenile Justice Department and her work as a family therapist gave her unique insights into the obstacles some of the students in our programs face.  

“Many of the students in some of our specialized programs have experienced challenges beyond their years, and Miriam was a thoughtful advocate and voice for them,” says NWRESD Superintendent Dan Goldman. “We will really miss her knowledge and experience and especially her heart for making sure students of color are getting the resources and support they need.” 

Miriam says participating in thoughtful conversations about how to support students and families better and then ensuring policies were in place to support that work is a highlight of her tenure. She also enjoyed thinking outside the box about how to deliver programs and services to rural schools that often have less access. 

The board celebrated Miriam at its June 11 board meeting and presented her with a locally made serving board in the shape of the state of Oregon. She will continue to serve on the NWRESD Foundation's board of directors, which funds special projects and experiences for students with disabilities and other challenges. 

“Miriam's passion and commitment to represent NWRESD's culturally diverse communities have made a difference to our board,” says NWRESD Board Chair Becky Tymchuk. “Her advocacy for our families will have a lasting impact on the work we do.”

Mjere Simantel, the director of Washington County Health and Human Services, will replace Miriam in the social service position starting July 1.
